The decision to cancel school due to snow, ice, or cold weather conditions is taken seriously at Harlem School District 122. The district considers several factors before deciding to close school as we understand closing school has an impact on our students, families, and staff. School cancellations will be made up at the end of the year.
Typically, a wind chill of negative 25 will start the conversation about possibly canceling school. If there is a forecasted sustained windchill of negative 30 and/or a weather warning (not a range) school will be canceled. Other factors that are considered in closing school include: conversations with neighboring districts, do all of the buildings have heat, can the parking lots be plowed before the start of the school day, will the buses start and are the road conditions safe for travel.
As a parent, you have the best perspective to determine the right course of action for your child based on your family circumstances. You have the final decision concerning your child and their safely traveling to and from school. Please inform your child’s school to report an absence, if necessary.
When possible, decisions to close school will be made as early as possible. In all these situations you can expect the following communication from the district:
A district official will utilize our mass notification system, Finalsite Mass Notification, to call and email parents and staff regarding any change to the school schedule. Please make sure that your emergency contact information on file with the district is current. Phone calls will be sent from 779-771-5800 and emails will be sent from communications@harlem122.org.
