The Seal of Biliteracy is an award approved by the Illinois State Board of Education and given by the school district in recognition of students who have studied and attained a high level of proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English, by high school graduation. The Seal of Biliteracy is a statement of accomplishment for attaining competency in two or more languages and is viewed as an asset when applying for college admission or employment. Participation by a school, school district, or county is voluntary.
Since the 2018–2019 school year, Harlem School District 122 has proudly awarded the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish. This year, for the first time, the district is also recognizing students in Serbian and Bosnian—an important milestone that reflects Harlem’s commitment to honoring language proficiency and celebrating its growing linguistic diversity. At the 2025 BPAC Multicultural Celebration, Harlem CUSD #122 recognized graduating seniors who earned the Seal by demonstrating high proficiency in English and at least one other language across all modalities: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In cases where students could not attend, proud family members accepted the award on their behalf. Congratulations to all recipients on this exceptional accomplishment
