Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading activity for all Harlem 122 students in 4th through 6th grades. This reading program helps promote teamwork, develops critical thinking, and engages students in reading a wide variety of literary genres. This school year, every elementary building in the Harlem District that has 4-6th grade students is participating in Battle of the Books! Battle of the Books works like this: The Harlem Elementary Librarians choose 20 books to be on our Battle list. Students who choose to participate read those 20 books and form Battle teams at their home school. The Battle teams in each school compete against each other, earning points when they correctly identify a book's title and author when given a quote from a book. Each elementary building has its teams battle until there is a school champion. Our All District Battle of the Books will take place this year on Wednesday, May 10 at Machesney Elementary. The evening will begin at 6:00 p.m. and all are welcome to attend and watch the championship teams from our elementary schools battle for the District Championship!
The students at Machesney Elementary School enjoyed a morning of music with the Great Lakes Naval Rock Band. Machesney’s music teacher, Hannah Fidler, organized the event to help students celebrate National Music Month. We appreciate Hannah and the band for giving our students a reason to smile and dance this morning.
